Founded in 1914 by six Italian brothers crazy about racing, Maserati was formed to craft race cars for private use. It wasn’t until 1947 that the company, by now in the hands of the Orsi family, began to produce the A6, the first road car. With only 138 cars produced in the next decade, the Maserati company survived by manufacturing and selling other products such as spark plugs and batteries.
Even with a stellar racing reputation, the Maserati company went through quite a few changes until finally ending up as a part of the Ferrari establishment. Along the way, Maserati racked up accolades as a front-runner in the racing industry with many wins around the globe in their custom made race cars. However, the fuel crisis at the time took its toll and Citroen was forced into bankruptcy and Maserati was sold to Argentinean Alejandro de Tomaso, who quickly rolled out the Quattroporte III, a four-door luxury sedan. Once a part of the Ferrari family in 1997, things began looking up for the Maserati company, with models finally introduce to the United States market in 2002 and restoring prestige to the Italian company. In 2005 Maserati was split from Ferrari, but remained a part of Fiat. This year also saw the reintroduction of the Quattroporte III luxury sedan, as well as the Maserati Gran Turismo.
