Founded in 1914 by six Italian brothers crazy about racing, Maserati was formed to craft race cars for private use. It wasn’t until 1947 that the company, by now in the hands of the Orsi family, began to produce the A6, the first road car. With only 138 cars produced in the next decade, the Maserati company survived by manufacturing and selling other products such as spark plugs and batteries.
Even with a stellar racing reputation, the Maserati company went through quite a few changes until finally ending up as a part of the Ferrari establishment. Along the way, Maserati racked up accolades as a front-runner in the racing industry with many wins around the globe in their custom made race cars. It wasn’t until the 1960’s the automaker shifted the focus from race cars to road cars. Under the directorship of Cirtroen, who acquired the company in 1968, Maserati released such models as the Mistral Coupe and Sebring.
However, the fuel crisis at the time took its toll and Citroen was forced into bankruptcy and Maserati was sold to Argentinean Alejandro de Tomaso, who quickly rolled out the Quattroporte III, a four-door luxury sedan. Once a part of the Ferrari family in 1997, things began looking up for the Maserati company, with models finally introduce to the United States market in 2002 and restoring prestige to the Italian company. In 2005 Maserati was split from Ferrari, but remained a part of Fiat. This year also saw the reintroduction of the Quattroporte III luxury sedan, as well as the Maserati Gran Turismo. A Maserati Gran Turismo rental sees a sleek, sexy Italian lovely, curvy and sumptuous.
Seductively modern, the good news is this sweetheart drives as good as it looks. Although lacking in many of the modern day technological devices employed by the majority of luxury car manufacturers, many believe this only adds to a purer driving experience. This is not to say when you rent a Maserati Gran Turismo you will notice any kind of a lack – quite the contrary. The hand-stitched leather seats, an electronically adjustable suspension, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps with washers, heated 10-way power front seats with driver memory, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose surround-sound audio system and a hard-drive-based navigation system are all amenities to assure you that you are in the lap of luxury.
The real attraction to a Gran Turismo is the performance. With such an excellent pedigree, you would expect nothing less. The 4.2-liter V8 engine pumps out enough power to thrill even the most jaded. For sophistication, luxury, and an excellent reputation for performance, the Maserati Gran Turismo definitely keeps pace with the luxury sports coupe market.
